Ever wondered what antioxidants are?  Free radicals cause a natural body process called Oxidation.
These can damage our healthy cells, our DNA, tissues, organs and muscles, and can also increase our risk for diseases like cancer, heart disease and premature aging.

So is there anything we can do to minimise or prevent this damage?  Enter antioxidants, your cell super hero!  They fight those free radicals so they can’t do any more damage and even better, they repair damage already done to cells, so it makes sense to eat foods rich in antioxidants to stop the oxidation process.

There are tons of foods that are great sources of antioxidants and, the best part is, they are common foods and easily available so you can include them in your diet right away!   Colourful fruits and vegetables are best, and we’ve included a list of 9 foods, rich in antioxidants to start you off.

1. Berries:  Blackberries, Blueberries, Raspberries.  Berries top the list for the highest concentrations of antioxidants.

2. Cranberries:  Well known for their high antioxidant properties.  Also contains flavonoids that increase the antioxidant activity in the body.

3 Broccoli:  High in vitamin C and selenium.  Selenium helps fight the damage to your cells and broccoli contains a powerful antioxidant compound that hinders the growth of breast, cervical and prostate cancer as well as boosts liver function.

4. Beans: Beans contain cysteine, which is an antioxidant that helps flush out free radicals from the body.

5. Walnuts:  Walnuts are loaded with antioxidants, they’re also cholesterol free and low in sodium and sugar.  Full of calories though so eat in moderation.

6. Ground Cloves:  Just a teaspoon of ground cloves can do wonders for your body!  Spice up your meals and boost your health at the same time.

7. Grapes:  Go for the dark-skinned ones!  The skin of red grapes is a rich source of an antioxidant that fights cancer.

8. Beets.  Beets are rich in the antioxidant betalain which is an anti-inflammatory, fungicidal which helps in detoxification.

And lastly:

9. Dark Chocolate:  It’s true!  Dark chocolate contains powerful antioxidants and can lower your blood pressure.  Remember though, eat this in moderation.
